Historians largely self-teach how books work and how to write one. Rarely do we ever get that editorial assistance. This matters when we finish our dissertation books because of this context and legacy.
Listening to a reporter talk about the way thoughtful editors turn a manuscript from a collection of chapters into a book with a narrative and that is cohesive. Then, I'm thinking about history graduate students learning this on thier own while doing dissertation work.
