I could sit and people-watch under Michigan Ave (by Billy Goat Tavern) all day long. (Translation: when the sun's out, I can't seem to find subjects that interest me, so I go to dark places.) #photography#chicago

We're under Michigan Ave in all these shots. Using a 50-200mm (ish) lens, so we can snap some shots unobtrusively from half a block down. Here we're looking at the base of a staircase from this lower level, up to the main tourist section of Michigan Ave. A man in a white and green striped shirt is pointing off to the right, presumably giving directions for two or three middle aged women. Behind him, the horizontal lines of the stairs play nicely against the horizontal lines of his shirt.
Here we're looking at a very similar, scene. But I think we're across the street on the east side, again looking north. This time a postal worker in blue attire is ascending the stairs. The light is just showing down on him, illuminating him from the top, while most of the rest of the scene is in shadows. On the right, some brick walls are illuminated in a greenish light.
We're back at the first staircase. A man in all white/gray is descending. His hair is short and gray. He's taking off sunglasses. Because of the light and his slight motion blur, he looks sort of ethereal and stands out against the motionless and dark background. In the foreground, an SUV is crossing through the intersection, off the right of the frame. Its back side is metalic and shows some bright highlight points. Its tail light gives a heavily saturated red/orange glow.
Same staircase, on the west side of the road, with two pedestrians descending the staircase. A woman in a white top and jeans descends behind a man in a red shirt and jeans. His left arm is extended, pointing (our) right in the image. It's not clear if he's giving directions, pointing out something noteworthy, etc.

A side lot in Harvey, IL. #NightPhotography#photography#illinois

We're in the street, looking at the side lot next to a one story home. It's night and the scene is mostly shadows. On the left, the white/beige home has a yellowish warm lone light illuminating the scene from the side entrance to the home. That home is up two to three concrete steps. The right railing of that stairway is broken and leaned up against the steps. There's a really large tree in the center of the image, it's trunk perhaps big enough that two adults would be needed to wrap their arms all the way around it. On the far side of the tree, an Adirondack chair sits, lit in high-contrast, warm light. It's a little bit eerie, a little bit forlorn, a little bit inviting, a place you might want to escape and sit for a bit to think, but while also wondering who's watching, from the shadows, or -- from the car where I sit, taking photos.

I’ll start here by sharing of my favorite photos from a trip to NYC last year.

Lonesome fire fighter on the banks of the Little Calumet River. #photography#NightPhotography#illinois

In a grassy field, a fire hydrant stands alone. It's glossiness and saturation and orange-red color stand out eerily against the uniform, paler green tones of the grass. Behind, a line of trees stands nearly in the shadows, their trunks barely visible above the noise floor. Behind them, the city light pollutes the night sky with a faint milky bluish gray.

A hole in the sky. #photography#clouds#sky

Evening view of a corner of a modern building with two lit windows, in front of dark clouds, with a wide hole through which the blue sky and some sun lit cloud edge are visible.

"Love My City" Tod Park in East Chicago, Indiana. #photography#ClimateCrisis#environment

We're standing on a series of basketball court. We're looking from behind the first backboard, down across two courts. They're vacant. Which makes me think of the kids who aren't here playing, but should be. And maybe would be, but for the giant petrochemical tanks literally across the road in big cylindrical white containers numbered 106, etc.
Here we're standing in a field. In the foreground is a pole with signs pointing left and right reading "basketball", "volleyball", "playground". But given the composition of the image, the signs are pointed at these same white petrochemical containers. But they're not even the SAME ones. There are several dozen, and despite looking identical, these are different ones from the last frame.
Here we're standing on a sidewalk on a residential block. On the right are half a dozen bungalow houses. At the end of the block, again, we see these cylindrical white petrochemical storage buildings. They must be less than 40 feet from the building at the end of the block.
In the foreground is an art installation featuring the slogan "love my city". It's white on cherry red. In the center is a heart-shaped hole, letting you peer through. Through the hole, we see a grassy field, and beyond it (not very far) are more of these same white cylindrical petrochemical storage buildings.
