If you want to know where my politics come from, this is from a letter my grandfather wrote to me 45 years ago, when I was a boy, about a pogrom he survived. He grew up in a shtetl in czarist Russia (now Ukraine). In America, he became a civil rights activist, alongside my grandmother.
