It's worse for academic publishing. We pretty much get nothing. My third book is coming out and I'll get paid a flat $800 which is more than I'd ever see in royalties anyway.

That's because the market for academic books is tiny. The rewards for academic publishing are tenure, salary, and promotions, not royalties and advances. It is a good thing that even books with tiny potential audiences are published.
