So this just happened: got a last-minute chance to be keynote speaker at the ICES conference! Too bad it is just one week from now, but I shall do what I can🫠 www.ices.dk/events/asc/2...
Canadian fires in 2023 released more carbon than every country but US/China/India. Driven by "extreme" temps that will be common in 2050s. Example of how physical climate hazards may exacerbate carbon emissions, in a self-reinforcing loop. Bad. #DailyPaper
Satellite carbon monoxide observations show that carbon emissions from the 2023 Canadian forest fires are comparable to the annual fossil fuel emissions of large nations.

Suomussalmen tapaus kertoo välinpitämättömyydestä, jonka korjaaminen on luontokadon pysäyttämisessä välttämätöntä, kirjoittaa HS:n politiikan toimittaja Petja Pelli.
New paper on the timing and geological context of two co-evolving salmonid fish radiations (predator-prey system) driven by adaptation-to-depth in the Great Lakes: www.nature.com/articles/s42...
Laurentian Great Lakes fish diversification predates the Last Glacial Maximum and was likely driven by novel habitats and predator–prey dynamics.
Still two weeks to apply for this PhD position in gorgeous northern Norway! Please share widely - and get in touch for more information on project, qualifications (which are flexible!), etc.

Last chapter of my PhD is out in bioRxiv! Using simulations 📈 we evaluated strategies of selective exploitation 🎣 based on life histories and source-sink dynamics of a network of populations, using the case of Atlantic salmon 🐟! Results suggest being not selective as the best strategy. Check it out!
Eco-evolutionary consequences of selective exploitation on metapopulations illustrated with Atlantic salmon https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.07.25.605173v1
While the eco-evolutionary consequences of dispersal and exploitation are increasingly recognized, c
