Seeing people just now reluctantly stepping out of twitter/x is a sign of how far we have to go. We are still in a raging informational pandemic, we have only begun stemming the tide. Its too early to talk about rolling back the harm.
We did the best we could to return to non-addictive information streams and they didnt, or haven't taken. Thats why the language of harm reduction is useful here. Sometimes you just need to pull someone out of something that is hurting them towards something that might span the gap to sustainability
By self-constructed I do not mean it is anyone's fault. That pattern is the most profitable industry of the last 30 years. I mean constructed around someone, with their feedback to get the enclosure just right, in a process that is entirely extractive of them as a whole person.
It only takes losing one beloved person to a self constructed informational black hole to know how real the stakes are.
This is true, and also there are a dozen disasters before it that should have been clues corporate social media was really bad for the planet. The best we can do for our loved ones is harm reduction towards less weaponized information streams and helping to redirect that energy to people they love.
