Between those two is Snaxs Cafe a proper locals lunch joint. Very well served in Edinburgh for pubs. Lots of places with live music in the evening for the solo traveller. A little ways down South Bridge and off side streets there are The Royal Oak and the Captain's Bar which are recommended.

Of course plentiful literature on doing local history generally but nothing comes to mind on a starter pack either general or place specific though it is a great idea. You might be able to find reference to something in BALH'S back publications...
