Periodic reminder: these violent mass arrests almost always result in most charges being thrown out & expensive lawsuits. Police do them anyway because in the meantime they do succeed in slowing down movements, that now have to deal with trauma, injury, legal fees, jail support campaigns, smears etc
Being arrested was grounds for eviction under a lease I had to sign once. No requirement for charge/indictment or conviction. Just an arrest.
Movements become torn between a need not to abandon brutalized / incarcerated / prosecuted protesters, and a need to maintain focus on the original issue. This is deliberate and intended by the government / cops & in this case the academic institutions!
also cops don’t give a shit about lawsuits because they don’t pay them
the cruelty is the point, etc
Plus they perform the duty of warning others of what is to come if they protest
And they scare people. People quit.
