This all needs reframing, when you take into account the costs of healthcare, social care, education, defence etc etc most working people will be net recipients for some, even all of their lives.

Leaving home for uni at 18 used to be a pretty clean break, if you wanted one. Now, I see my kids' generation maintaining their childhood friendships, and returning to them three years later. This parent thing seems consistent with the loss of that opportunity to reinvent oneself.
