Footnotes are often held up as symbols of academics' pompousness and pedantry, but this is unfair. We also use them to exercise our hobby horses and throw shade on our enemies

This author apparently cares enough about the singular of "dice" that he has included two footnotes about it in his book.

A footnote reading "'Die' is singular for a cube with six sides, each side with a pip designating the side’s number: 1 - 6. The plural is 'dice.'"
