She even made a scavenger hunt for exploring the materials & bookmarks for prizes! (Both were a big hit.) 😍

Saturday Spotlight yesterday on mythical creatures. The curator, English PhD student Lauren Colwell, did such an amazing job of curating this open-house event.

Image of Ohio State University's Thompson Special Collections reading room. Several books displayed open on tables, with labels and a stack of handouts in front.
Serpentvm, et draconv[m] historiæ libri dvo (Two Books on the History of Serpents and Dragons) (1640) by Ulisse Aldrovandi, open to a page of text on right and a full-page illustration of a dragon-like creature on left.

A highlight of this week was having students in a modernism class compare first editions & reprints. Inspired by an activity by Mattie Taormina in Using Primary Sources (2014).

Two copies of Virginia Woolf's Three Guineas. Left is the first edition with a cover designed by Vanessa Bell; Right is a paperback featuring a cartoon of Woolf seemingly on trial before a judge.
Two copies of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. Left is the first edition with an classical-inspired design of a man and angel reclining on the front; right is the reprint featuring the a man and woman in an embrace.
Two copies of James Joyce's Ulysses. Left is the first edition featuring the title and author name on an otherwise spare blue-green background; right is a reprint that features the title in a stylized script with an image of a torn piece of paper in the background.

Recently read Paul Yamazaki's Reading the Room: A Bookseller's Tale & especially loved learning about the process & decisions that go into stocking an independent bookstore.

Cover of Paul Yamazaki's Reading the Room: A Bookseller's Tale, features Yamazaki seated in bookstore in front of shelves.

Session today on pulp magazines, the ads are my favorite part.

Ad for "Oracle of Hermes" book that promises to answer questions about your future.
"Correct Your Nose" ad shows a man wearing a brace on his nose with straps going around his face.
Ad for Woodstock typewriters featuring two winners of a typewriting competition.
