The "natural birth" movement in the 1970s grew up in reaction to mid-century hospital practices that required "twilight sleep" anesthesia, which produces amnesia, banning partners/doulas, and others. It's too bad both sides remain polarized rather than working toward even better hospital practices.

It's too bad because there is a related correct point, which is that doctors and hospital procedures can be disrespectful, even dehumanizing toward women. They are big bureaucracies run by flawed humans. It used to be even worse. But not the same as "things were better without modern medicine."

I think the cool thing to say on social media is that people who get things very wrong "were always like this." But people usually aren't binary in this way. Silver for a number of years had a mix of good and bad judgement, and seemed to be a good editor. He has gotten much worse.

Oh no, Nate. Don't do this. "Lichtman is comically overconfident and doesn't own up to the subjectivities in his method, but you'll legit learn a lot about presidential elections by reading his work, and he's at least putting himself out there making testable predictions."

The wild thing is that, if it follows the arc of other tech companies, this is as user-friendly and useful as OpenAI will ever be. They are still burning through cash and havenā€™t even started the enshitification stage when they try to grab revenue. www.nytimes.com/2024/09/27/t...
