At the Covid-19 Inquiry today Boris Johnson has justified his government's poor coronavirus pandemic response by arguing it was “outside our living experience”. Perhaps he should have spoken to a historian. niche-canada.org/2022/08/11/t...#HistMed#HistSci#EnvHist@petermandler.bsky.social

I am shocked, but sadly unsurprised, to learn from @apf102.bsky.social that History Reclaimed has an absolutely repellant article claiming that Canadian residential schools were designed to help Indigenous children "escape" from "regrettable and disabling indigenous lifestyles". 🗃️ 1/

Last night was the first time I've been certain about a brown bear being in our garden in northern Greece, having left a trail across the moonlit snow past our woodpiles and front door before dropping backwards over the edge of a stone wall by hanging on with its front claws. New garden species!

Three large bear prints in snow moving in the direction of our woodpiles and house.
Black and white image looking down on a series of closely spaced bear prints in snow.
Black and white image looking up towards the house in the steps of a bear.
The stone wall and claw marks in snow where the bear lowered itself down towards the river.

A postcard depicting Therese Bertheau, one of the best known early female mountaineers in Norway, as drawn by Ole Christoffer Thorkelsen, c. 1900 📷: Mittet & Co. AS/Nasjonalbiblioteket

A portrait postcard with a colour drawing of a female mountaieer, carring an alpenstock and rucksack and wearing a long brown skirt, a red and yellow striped shirt and a straw hat, looking along a mountain ledge towards two men she is roped together with. There is a handwritten message on the top of the card - "gladelig jul og godt nyttår" (?)
