Wow, I don't think I'd ever seen Georgia O'Keeffe's early NY skyscraper paintings! There's an exhibit closing soon in Chicago and getting ready to move to Atlanta hyperallergic.com/950026/first...

The Shelton with Sunspots, NY, 1926. A tall, dark skyscraper viewed from below looking up, with the glare of the sun in a cloudy sky obscuring part of the top of the building. Circles of orange and yellow dot the surrounding area, perhaps representing a lens flare.
Manhattan, 1932. A multicolored, abstracted, geometrical view of New York skyscrapers. We see tall white jagged rectangles, pink triangles, and brown jagged rectangles in the foreground, with a more familiar background of other overlapping buildings in blue and white—maybe some of the blue is sky. Depictions of three flower blossoms—blue, pink, and red—also dot the canvas.
City Night, 1926. Two abstracted skyscrapers—angled planes of black and gray—viewed from below looking up. A white shape—a third skyscraper—peeks out between the others.
Radiator Building—Night, New York, 1927. A skyscraper at night, black with many illuminated windows, with distinctive bright, curved decorative elements at its top. The sky is broken up by searchlights and smoke. We also see what looks like a neon-red sign that says Alfred Stieglitz.

Drat! I will just miss it in Chicago as I’ll be visiting in October. Will see whatever is on at the AIC as I love that place so much.

Had the good fortune to see these at the Art Institute in Chicago in late August. Just beautiful!

I love cityscapes where they paint the light.
