ICYMI: Labour mayor Andy Burnham has urged PM Starmer’s govt to carry out a review of the FPTP voting system used for Westminster Burnham: “I appreciate [the govt is] probably not ready to go out there to commit to a big change. But why not launch a review of the voting system for the Commons?"
Even the voting system inside the HOC itself is so out of date it's not even last century. The whole system is a relic from centuries ago.
In my opinion, PR would mean Labour has an almost permanent controlling influence in the HoC. Sure, it would need coalition partners such as LDs and Green, but cooperation means less extreme policies, and it works in almost all EU countries very well.
Could we have PR, but also more control on newspapers?Particularly who can own newspapers, and where those people can live/pay tax etc?
Well . . . we have waited for nearly 170 years since Thomas Hare pointed out the deficiencies of FPTP and did something about it, so another few generations can die before anything gets done whilst the Government goes on bleating about our being a "Democracy". 😠 😠 😠
Absolutely zero chance, Andy, save your breath.
What, so they can blame that when they fail to get in next time instead of their own incompetence?
I still worry about the implication of this. FPTP had many flaws but it definitely quells extreme parties and prevents them having an undue influence. PR could suddenly make a Reform party as kingmaker. They would demand concessions...
😂😂😂😂 Like that’s going to happen with a Government that got in on a protest vote
I’m afraid they’ll be too one dimensionally focusing on “service delivery” at the exclusion of other routes to repair the social fabric one of which is clearly addressing the UK’s democratic deficit
