I’ve written a lot on methodology in political philosophy with more to come, but really my methodology is that of the compost heap. Read bits and pieces of a lot of different things, let it meld together, and hope something fertile comes out the other side in a year or two.
I find it has to compost a while first ...
a proper Monty Don methodology would necessitate three brains and regular stirring for good aeration
First time I've heard a philosopher admit his work is shit.
I used to think I didn’t have much of a methodology until I was forced to think about how to teach it. I realized there was loads more to it: logic, thought experiments, counterfactual reasoning, reflective equilibrium, dialogue etc. So much systematic use made of the imagination.
Be the worm!
Tim Thornton once gave a talk where he described his philosophical methodology as "lying in a blood-warm bath with an ice pack on my head, thinking"
Yup. The Sellarsian project to say 'how things hang together' is valuable to the extent that the things are a varied bunch.
What you end up with is a massive glut of broad beans.....
Very optimistic composter. Mine is full of old sticks, bits of cork and things I don’t understand. I suppose I think just like that.
