Silly BBC is talking about bedbugs as a Paris problem threatening the Olympics. The real problem is long term underfunding of public transport. Stop subsidizing gasoline and subsidize trains instead! (Walking to work)

One thing to look out for after the Slovak election is the Christian Democratic KDH, socially conservative party that nonetheless subscribes to democratic values, excluding coalition with populist Fico. If this holds, may see a connection between cultural conservatism and constitutional liberalism.

The call is out for the Nuffield PPRF. Probably one of the most attractive postdocs in political science. 3 years, focus on research, very vibrant environment especially for early career researchers. Please get in touch if you have any questions. polisky www.nuffield.ox.ac.uk/the-college/...

Czechs drink beer, but it has low alcohol content (Pilsner Urquell, a “strong” beer by Czech standards, is only 4.3% alcohol). That said, the Czechs refer to a heavy drinker as someone who “Drinks like a Dane” — the map seems to give some legitimacy to the stereotype…

Wild to see highest per capita beer consumption Czechia having a lower alcohol death rate than its neighbors.

This is an important point. I agree that SMER will primarily hurt Slovakia, not Ukraine, and that the 18% for Progressive Slovakia is a reason to celebrate (moderately).

Pew Research Center analysis found that Democrats and Republicans in Congress are now farther apart ideologically than at any time in the past 50 years. Republicans have moved further to the right than Democrats have to the left. www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...

The good news is that the more radical right parties (SNS has moderated) are out of parliament. The bad news is that Fico is taking up their views…
