i remember reading unfortunate events and having so much heartbreak and empathy for the baudelaire children, I wanted them to come out okay. i think you get some of that in HP but there is also so many scenarios where the harry potter kids are put into danger and its treated as 'fun'

i think it really comes down to how the writing comes off mostly. Harry potter just seems so incredibly mean spirited and shitty where series of unfortunate events comes off as tragic and empathetic
