It's the ten year anniversary of XKCD 1425, one of the all-time greats and one that resonates slightly differently today. Wrote up some notes on that here: https://simonwillison.net/2024/Sep/24/xkcd-1425-turns-ten-years-old-today/

XKCD comic. Cueball: When a user takes a photo, the app should check whether they're in a national park... Ponytail: Sure, easy GIS lookup gimme a few hours. Cueball: ...and check whether the photo is of a bird. Ponytail: I'll need a research team and five years. Caption: In CS, it can be hard to explain the difference between the easy and the virtually impossible.

@jemsuhttps://github.com/posit-dev/positron/issues/2586 Do you want to chime in there? Others of us have not been able to reproduce this. I'll ask David how that played out.

From Joe Cheng's presentation on adding a chatbot to a Shiny app: Chat-enabled data dashboard Live demo: https://jcheng.shinyapps.io/sidebot/https://github.com/jcheng5/py-sidebot [Original post on masto.machlis.com]

Conventional dashboard with restaurant tipping on right, but on the left is a chatbot with the instructions You can use this sidebar to filter and sort the data based on the columns available in the tips table. Here are some examples of the kinds of questions you can ask me:

Filtering: "Show only Male smokers who had Dinner on Saturday."
Sorting: "Show all data sorted by total_bill in descending order."
Answer questions about the data: "How do tip sizes compare between lunch and dinner?"
You can also say "Reset" to clear the current filter/sort, or "Help" for more usage tips.
