My mother is staying with us, over from the US, and has something like that in her suitcase… it appears to date from pre-1970 or so. I asked her if it also came with some special implement to open the ‘gates’. She didn’t know what I was referring to

15 years and I’d never noticed / known about that.
Mine did that too. Not about cheese though. There is a theory that it’s a response to getting too hot - they are always v sweaty when it happens… I don’t know if that’s cause or effect, but I think it did get better when I took away the duvet and got them some lighter blankets.
