I feel you. For me messing with avs is relaxing, so it is usually when I am exhausted - then I'll sit down and play dressup. Making something for a quick pic might take an hour, a few days for an avatar that will stay in saved looks, weeks of an hour here, 30min there if I am making a new RP char.
It's almost "Prime Day". If you look on your favorite shelter's website or instagram you might find that they have an amazon wishlist and that many of their items might be on sale. I hate amazon, I definitely encourage people to shop local whenever possible, but I'm just putting the info out there.
Terrain, building, skins, landscaping - items that are supposed to be large is where it actually matters, imo. Clothing? Uhhh maybe, if it is a large piece that uses 1-2 textures. 1024 textures on buttons are already stuff of nightmares.

I second Gimp. It's all I use for editing, doesn't feel lacking for me compared to PS, although getting used to UI took awhile.
