Perhaps. It was striking how many Labour MPs were speaking from very recent experience as renters. By contrast, the few Tories I saw speak were having to declare they were private landlords.

That's an objection to the very concept of security of tenure though! I am afraid that ship sailed during WW1!

Indeed.

Certainly gov policy over many decades played a role and I tend to agree that should be reflected in gov funding. But gov not the only ones we should be blaming.

Perhaps. 'Tho given how much the gov needs the PLC housebuilding industry to help meet the new homes targets, I can understand why there may be a reluctance to target them. There is no obvious or easy answer.

All of which puts the new gov in a really tough position. We shouldn't be starting from here. But we are. Do you push on (perhaps a bit more funding for LAs etc on RO applications?) or spend a lot of time and political capital on a new approach? Neither is particularly attractive.

Thirdly, there isn't enough freeholder buy in. They want to make buildings safe but don't see why they should pay. Just as leaseholders didn't build these nor did they. Couple that with frustration over gov reversals of policy, disputes over the BSF etc and you have a further point of conflict.
