There was MINCE. And Micro-Emacs (if you could stand its end-of-file behavior). And JOVE. A few others I've been using Epsilon (a commercial Emacs clone) for over 30 years. It's still getting updates and is still great.
Aquamacs is fine (or emacs in the terminal) for quick edits or quick looks… but I’ve been won over to VSCode by my students & colleagues subtle (& not so subtle) pressure…
