There are some really exciting hybrid inks out there that do fun things. Some reactivate with water to produce patchy and mottled effects, some go chalky, and you can do more than just stamp with them, they can be brushed or sponged on and blended to create abstract backgrounds.

Stencils are also multi-purpose. Flexible plastic stencils can be used to pressure emboss, as well as have ink sponged through them to create designs.
