I get that, but it rather goes against the ‘America is always on the right side of history, land of both the free and of free speech - bad things happen in other places’ mythology

So does slavery, Jim Crow, and many other things that are taught in even the most jingoistic history classes. It doesn't matter. It's all history, so it doesn't apply to today's America.
