There is real desperation when you're young to get FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED. These days, I'd tell someone to wait for the bigger publisher with the bigger money. You can go back and pub the other stuff with small presses or new publisher after. Get the biggest debut you can. It will cushion you later

Your advice to go with the bigger publisher for the bigger money reminds me of how Robert A. Heinlein wrote "Lifeline" (which would be his first published story) for a writing contest, but he wound up submitting it to Astounding first and they paid him more than the contest prize money. 1/2

Obvs, plenty of folks buck this trend: any number of small press debuts where you hit later, and I certainly have A career, even if not a MASSIVE career. But a big debut with big money and big publisher support is a better place to start from.
