"[Scotland] has detected no cases of cervical cancer in women born between 1988-1996 who were fully vaccinated against HPV between the ages of 12 and 13." That's honestly so amazing.
In a large Scottish study, no cases of cervical cancer were found among women who received HPV vaccines before they turned 14.
Morning to you, evening from me. Currently reading Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon as part of my Dark-Hunter series reread to catch up to the latest volumes.
I really enjoyed the action and drama of the movie as-is, but ngl I feel a tiny bit cheated of all the intrigue Maturin was involved in. Oh, and getting to see Diana.
Sometimes you just have to roll the dice, do a sniff test, and hope it all goes well gastrointestinally.
Purportedly, the parián was placed in a location that was within easy cannonshot of several cannons placed on the walls of Intramuros. This was done so if the residents rebelled, they could easily be bombarded back into submission.
Outside of Manila, there were also pariáns in Vigan, Malolos, Molo and Iloilo City - basically anywhere that there was a substantial presence of Chinese immigrants. One story told about the Manila parián, in particular, is about where it’s placed relative to Intramuros.
In order to make sure they were kept in line and under control, they were gathered into districts called pariáns, where they were strictly monitored. These communities would later evolve into the world’s oldest Chinatowns, with the parián of Manila eventually becoming the district of Binondo.
But to be clear: Chinese involvement with the Spanish colonizers was not quite so rosy as it might appear. The Chinese community that had coexisted and intermarried with the local Tagalog population was in place before the Spanish arrived, and they were considered a threat.
Chinese builders also helped build the cathedrals and churches of Manila, and there too they left their mark. Sculptures of Chinese guardian lion statues can be found at the entrances of San Agustin Cathedral, among other churches both in Manila and in Cebu.
It’s so fascinating to me when it goes both ways. The West always imposes itself on its colonies but somehow, some way, the colonised manage to leave their own marks. Can’t really kill it.
