I love this beautiful, smart, swooned, sometimes-still sometimes-gusty new book of poems from @mspencerpoet.bsky.social Molly Spencer. It feels like it’s made part out of wind and part out of something flying on wind. Go get this one.

The cover of Invitatory by Molly Spencer has an image with wide fields of thick blue that are sky and cloud and water and sky and a sliver of land, all stacked up on one another. In this picture, my hand holds the book in front of one of my favorite bodies of water—Long Lake in the Adirondacks.
A poem called “Nor can you leave it to the birds”. I can’t duplicate the extraordinary spacing here but here are the words

Of the set of nested bowls, none remains.

This is a word: lossless. Lingual is a word
meaning having to do with the tongue.

The tongue which is richly supplied with blood.
The tongue which is said to have a blade.

She who thought she would remember
does not remember

the vessel breaking, the last white bowl
slipping

from her hands

five small bones of the swallows tongue.

And once spoken can a thing be called back.

Her on her knees sweeping.

I asked a friend what their favorite Halloween costume was as a kid, and now I’m asking my Bsky friends. Comment below👇

I once dressed as a lamp. I wore all black and put this huge tasseled lampshade I found in my basement on my head. Stood very still.

Not coincidentally also some of the greatest closing paragraphs in a short story ever. Love that story.

seriously, acting like the idea is no big deal is just…incredibly ignorant. our current lack of support for people attempting to keep elderly relatives alive in the U.S. is just astounding. addressing that would be huge.

Yes, I am now a morning person but — and this is crucial for your safety tbh — I still very hate talking to other people in the morning. I don’t even start talking to myself until around 11am EST.

2/2 "What I am questioning is the value of the author’s commentary. I can’t add anything; what I can do is make the implicit explicit, which exactly reverses the poet’s ambition." -- Louise Glück
