For #BrainAwarenessWeek we asked Kavli-affiliated neuroscientists what their favorite part of the brain is! What's yours?

Lisa Genzel
What’s your favorite part of the brain?
The hippocampus-retrosplenial cortex-prefrontal cortex pathway

“I love how during sleep you can see the different regions talk to each other in a discussion where the retrosplenial cortex seems to be the mediator between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, as if those two would speak different dialects and they need the retrosplenial cortex to translate. It is lovely to watch in real time.”
Giulia Quattrocolo
What’s your favorite part of the brain?
Cajal-Retzius cells
“These neurons are present in the cortex and in the hippocampus during development but, while in the cortex they die soon after birth, they survive for much longer in the hippocampus. Why? What do they do in the hippocampus that makes them so important that they need to stick around? This is what I am trying to figure out!”
Graeme Davis
What’s your favorite part of the brain?
Syapses
“Synapses are much more than static relays. Synapses can grow and shrink, strengthen and weaken, thereby changing how information flows through the brain to enable learning and memory, emotion and pain.”
Erich D. Jarvis

What’s your favorite part of the brain?
The vocal learning circuit or pathway

“Our work suggest that the spoken language pathway is derived from a more ancient motor learning pathway found in vertebrates broadly, which has been subsequently specialized for the complex special behavior we do with learned vocal communication to pass on knowledge from one generation to the next.”

Sure, there is a notable football game on Sunday, but it's also *International Day of Women and Girls in Science!* And we're celebrating the achievements of our Kavli community - from Kavli Institutes to our grantees and partners. Thank you for all that you do! #WomenInSTEM
