Went to Word on the Street - I forgot how massive this fest is! Ran into a bunch of friends, heard a few readings, and picked up a few books along the way including new releases from @pipagaopoetry.bsky.social@jacobwren.bsky.social ✨️

A totebag from The Walrus laid out in the floor above which are copies of the following books: Baby Book by Amy Ching Yan Lam, Short Talks by Anne Carson, Echolalia by Jane Shi, Dry Your Tears to Perfect Your Aim by Jacob Wren

I thought this book would be like a Taschen-like compendium of demonic art but it's also a study of demonology through history based on an epistemic premise ("demonic poetics") that positions itself between empiricism and "mere" metaphor. I think it's a perfect read before bed

Cover of Pandemonium: A Visual History of Demonology by Ed Simon. To the left, a red panel of embossed reversed pentagrams. Right, a painting of a reddish humanoid demon with a bat-like face and wings, snakes coiling on its head, each hand grasping the leg of a human - it's eating from its left hand. Odd, snake-like creatures with goose bills are slithering around its torso and everything seems to arise from a smoky pyre
Two page interior spread.

Left page: in red blackletter typeface:
Introduction
Toward a Demonic Poetics

Right page: Zdzislaw Beksinski's untitled 1984 painting of a demonic man's head, rendered in orange, his skin tough like a fruit peel and shot through with cracks. He is wearing a stony, chipped ruffled Renaissance collar who "stares out of eyeless sockets. He is an eternal creature who exists where past, present, and future all collapse into a hellish singularity."
Two page spread of demon illustrations, part-animal part-beast creatures including one breathing fire, one surrounded by magickal sigils, one pissing on a man's fire and grabbing a man by his hair, making him drop his book as he screams in fear

Most are probably familiar with The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, but I think people today would find The Summer People more resonant because it considers class. It also brings to mind the tensions created when wealthy urbanites fled to cottage country during the pandemic

Left: Black and white headshot of Shirley Jackson with glasses and her hair pulled back, a wry smile. Right: black and white hands with dark polish claw ominously at a yellow envelope surrounded by thorny roses - an image taken from the cover of Jackson's Dark Tales

Spooky season is almost upon us 🍂 I've been saving up all these creepy reads, starting with this vampire book by my former editor @mulchgoblin.bsky.social#autumnreads

Copy of Fragile Animals by Genevieve Jagger which features a painting of a swan being hung by its feet. The book is set upon a wood desk with incense, dried flowers, a bivalve shell, gemstones and jade and a muskrat skull. It's from the muskrat heads I copped at a community feast when I was living up north. No one eats them, they get totally charred. I cleaned them myself.

Noted lots of support for Palestine and the MENA region throughout. More on the artists, musicians and vendors who participated here: www.gearyartcrawl.com

Couldn't find the artist for this one on the website :( A three-part installation of paintings in an industrial lot. The central painting is the bust of a woman wearing a hijab looking upward with a pigeon on her shoulder. On either side are paintings of open hands with red light shining onto each palm
Painting by Kalmplex, a portrait of an older bearded Palestinian journalist in a blue press jacket

Spent the autumnal equinox outdoors at the annual Geary Art Crawl 🍂 (reposting with the names of artists and vendors in the alt text)

Ventura by Amanda Lobos: a large, colourful, inflatable Janus-faced creature seated atop a large industrial building. Below, a man seated and checking his phone
and now, to see what I feel by Van Ness: a large black and white art installation spanning the width of a street of women with long black hair with pensive expressions, one weeping
