In 1845, Mr Evans blew up the ship Santa Anna on the Mississippi at Vicksburg, before a crowd of gratified spectators, using the ingenious galvanic battery of Mr Anderson. Further explosions were hoped for, but it would be 19 more years before Vicksburg had more than enough.
