It's a profession that extracts value without providing any. They sell a product that they did not make - with little-to-no local competition - to people who are essentially *forced* to buy them, since you can't navigate most American communities without a car.
Check out Bernie Moreno, who is running for Senate in OH vs. Sherrod Brown. He's a former car dealer. The profession definitely has a type.
At the age of 20, I spent a month or so working as a trainee car salesman. It permanently affected my view of my fellow humans. I was young and naive and did not know how heartless and smugly evil people could be, and remain completely convinced they were normal.
When I list the groups of Americans who are likely to be modern Republicans, I start with car dealers: Their businesses are based on restraint-of-trade laws & opposition to the public goods, adorned with tall flag poles & other patriotic symbols.
I worked with car dealers for five years and you have greatly over-estimated their morality.
