If they were honest it would dilute their perceived value of their own opinion because it would be in line with popular culture. NYT applies the same logic that a social media poster uses when they hold the weirdest possible take and thinks that unique is the same as important/valuable
This is sad, really, because outside of the political reporting the NYT is generally pretty good.
Does everyone remember how super confident we were in HRC’s victory in 2016? I worry that we are all, including the NYT, repeating a pattern here.
The predicate for this dunk is, Magary says The Times is falsely claiming that the polls suggest the race is closer than it is. The background for the dunk—that the paper's bothsidesing horserace journalism has been deeply problematic—I agree with. But I don't buy him saying the race isn't close!
Harris knows "they’ll seize on any gaffe (she) makes if it gives them a chance to falsely equivocate her remarks to those of Trump screaming, “THEY’RE EATING THE DOGS!” to kick up a racial holy war." Well put.
Drew is right and I appreciate his honesty
Excellent piece by Magary! It won't change the NYT's political coverage one bit but one could hope the newspaper may eventually become only a regional one or maybe just a local one. It's badly fumbled its role as a national newspaper.
