The GOP base savaged Chris Christie for the sin of putting aside partisanship and working with Obama to help his constituents after Hurricane Sandy. The rest of the party got the message — don’t work with a Democrat, even if it hurts your own people.

And Charlie Crist (who eventually just switched parties). The 2009 hug between Crist and Obama was ostensibly what torpeadoed Crist's GOP career, maybe moreso than Chris Christie's. Which still seems bananas but fits with a revanchist GOP even then.

DeSantis will now do whatever he can to help Milton savage Orlando and other blue areas to fuck with their voting in November.

Plus, since Reagan conservatives have been messaged relentlessly that government doing anything for you is bad and not to be trusted. I assume this is part of why they have elected officials who do nothing for their constituents or worse, but still get reelected as long as they are mean to libs.

I would go even further and say the GOP has an explicit strategy/desire to have everyone, including their base, suffer in any way possible. The suffering combined with a toxic drip of disinformation is what makes the fascist engine run.
