Adjusting consumer sentiment to remove this "asymmetric amplification" of political developments raises consumer sentiment, but it remains comparable to sentiment seen after the Great Recession or at the onset of the pandemic.

That Republicans boo louder when out of power accounts for 30% of the gap between observed and predicted consumer sentiment is meaningful, but as Ryan and Neale say, there are a lot of other things that might be contributing to current negative sentiment.
