With WoT that's quite a cost, especially if you read them back to back (I do not recommend this!) Read 1 a year and the 3 chapters of recap becomes far less annoying!

For me, that only resulted in lost momentum in the slow (so incredibly, painfully, slow) middle books. I had to commit to reading them rapidly to finally finish. And it was worth it in the end.
