It's a foolish reason to vote for someone particularly if you aren't rich (which most voters aren't) but "Trump is a liar and therefore I don't believe he actually means all the racist stuff" is a pretty pervasive belief among non-MAGA Trump voters.

It's not just low information. There are also lots of voters who know Trump says stuff like that and just don't believe him because he is a liar (which he is) and do believe he will cut taxes (because he did).

Fox's polling outfit follows best practices and is well-respected, and they don't cherry-pick polls they publish. Obviously, the talking heads will spin it however they spin it.

It also seems to enable blaming the electoral failures of the let on systemic problems with how we run elections. Which in some cases is absolutely the case (e.g. the gerrymandered house of reps) but in other cases, like, we just didn't get enough voters.
