When I was an undergrad, I saw a woman on the train with a button on her backpack that said “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”. I remember completely disagreeing with that. This move toward dissolving the family, or saying that we don't need each other and we could just be these totally individualized, autonomous beings with no conncetion to family, with no connection to our history, I reject that idea. I think we're all connected to something greater. *Women* are not the ones being the unrealistic, noxious individualists. We just don't need to *own* anyone to form communities and families and engage in mutual support with others.
There is so much to unpack in that statement. The epiphany wasn’t brought on by contemplating humans writ large, it was because a random woman had to audacity to display a cheeky button. That guy has absolutely made a 99 problems joke at some point and didn’t need to reevaluate the universe.
