I'm not sure we're properly weighing Trump's desperation to stay out of jail as a factor in the extremity of his behavior. Political scientists are keen to point out that elections should not have existentially high stakes for candidates, but that's what Trump's facing--he wins or goes to jail.
Oh I absolutely think it was a factor in his desperation to stay in office in the first place. He knew he committed a lot of crimes. Mueller said he could be prosecuted. Barr poisoned that but still the man has decades of criminal behavior.
50/50 SCOTUS just declares him "Most Special Boy" and he gets to stay out of prison.
I will still be very surprised if he does any time, but at his core he's a coward.
Still more than a month to go, but if polling starts to look really bad for Trump, I'd guess there's something like a 15% chance he skips the country before November 5.
Maybe, just maybe, our system of elections is a bit flawed.
Lmao he is not going to jail Just pure hopium There does not exist a single judge in america with the gall to sentence him to even one day for any of his “nonviolent*” crimes, and certainly none of the judges currently assigned Also ignoring the gang of 6 overturning every conviction *i disagree
He'll find a way to flee the country. Then he'll continue to raill against the American judicial system from abroad. This prediction is based on the supposition that he's managed to stow a fortune in bank accounts beyond the reach of the US government. A man of his wealth should find that easy.
He’s never going to jail
The lack of any stories or focus on this drives me nuts -- he has literally toyed out loud with the idea of fleeing the country! It's absolutely central to the danger he poses and the ratcheting up of violent rhetoric and stakes, but reporting carves it out as if it's an externality with no impact.
I have a hard time believing this guy will see the inside of a jail. If it’s not an appeals court, it’s SCOTUS letting him skate away. But the ability to just shut it all down is nevertheless very compelling.
