I definitely see Christina's World there but the skies in that painting are leaden! in the movie even the scenes of toil and exploitation have that AI glow

That's true. Of course Malick just can't resist the golden hour. Such a stylistic preoccupation I think he simply has an earnest fixation upon its effect. Which is not exactly counter to your reaction.
