Great question
These are fascinating examples.
My post is up on this here: klonick.substack.com/p/why-does-t...@anupamchander.bsky.social and Anu Bradford Would love to hear thoughts and replies on this, particularly if you have experience between these systems and cultures! 9/9
A number of scholars and economists have debated this question for years, and offered very different proposals for why. Here are three leading theories and what they mean for EU tech and regulation.
"Cultural differences" is such a soft catch-all. And we can do better. There are structural things that reflect cultural differences and those can move us closer to understanding answers in this regard -- this is one of the ones that's caught my eye, but there are many more 8/
In any event, I write about this specific thing, even though I think it is by no means a PRIMARY cause of the lack of tech innovation in Europe. But in the many issues I listed in my write-up of this a few weeks ago, one of the main ones was ~cultural differences~ 7/
And that has to have magnified effects! So you don't miss just a month of work, you miss 8 wks because it takes you another 4 wks after vacation to really get your whole team back into it again I'm curious to hear from native French people at US tech companies on this 6/
Not only do you lose kinda the energy for a new project, but you drop the working memory of being present in a project -- the code, the people, the flow of ideas, the vision for where it's going. That is actually really costly to pick back up again after a 4 week break! 5/
