By the time their bowls are empty, though, Goh is no more sure of what he could say than he was when he walked through the apartment door. He does not want to hear about his parents’ work. Even less does he want to tell them about his own. But what else is there to say? He could tell them about Chloe and her Eevee, his battle with Ash, about seeing Professor Cerise again—but these are all things he is still trying to digest, himself. And then, of course, there is Gary. He has been here all this time, unwavering. They’ve been here before, in the illusion. And when the floor started falling away from him, Gary held his hands and his gaze and demanded, “What do you need?” His parents are across the table from him, awkward and waiting, uncertain. They have never known how to comfort or console him, have never been sure if they have even needed to. So often, he has been the one to reassure them—everything is okay, he’s fine, he doesn’t mind that they aren’t there, even when he wishes they could be. What does he need from them now? They could tell him how proud they are. They could apologize for leaving him alone so often he began to fear being any other way. They could promise to do better, to change, to be the parents he never had. But it would not change any of it. His childhood is the ghost in the corner of the room. It beckons him with cold, trembling hands. It tells him that things will always be this way, because this is the way things always were.
