Alyx is really amazing, even when played at potato settings. Running it on the LeGo via the Steam Link app, the game says I don't meet the minimum specs, but it'll run anyways. Ideal experience? No, but I can still play it and have fun. Better with the eGPU, for sure, but still good without it.
Also, to use the MQ3 for PCVR, you don't need crazy specs. I actually use mine with a Lenovo Legion Go. I've run it with just the LeGo, and also with an eGPU (RTX2070 8GB). Not gonna blow anybody's doors off in terms of graphics, but I can run VRChat, HL:Alyx, and tons of other stuff.
I've had the Quest 3 for a while now and quite like it. I've used it on its own and for PCVR.
Getting one helped me in that it allowed me to get international work visas. I never actually worked in my chosen field of study, but have put things I learned at college into use at several jobs and in various hobbies.
