If you are a visual learner like I am, you’ll love the illustrations, which show you at a glance how authors manage chronology, multiple narrators, scene components, and complex plots.

Three of the illustrations from the book, on The Secret Hours by Mick Herron, Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto, and The Searcher by Tana French

I tackle topics from backstory to theme, and each chapter includes concrete takeaways you can apply to your own work. The conclusion guides you through the process of conducting your own novel studies, so you can uncover the tools and techniques used by authors you want to learn from.

Table of contents, featuring chapters on The Dutch House, by Ann Patchett, The City We Became, by N.K. Jemisin, The Searcher, by Tana French, I Kissed Shara Wheeler, by Casey McQuiston and more!

NOVEL STUDY is here! If you’ve ever finished a novel & thought, “How did the author do that?” this book is for you. I spent a year following that question across the terrain of ten recent novels, & what I discovered is that each novel provides a different answer. www.thebluegarret.com/novelstudy

He had a guilty conscious > He had a guilty conscience. I see this typo a lot! "Conscience" is one of those words that looks more wrong the longer you look at it. How is CON + SCIENCE pronounced kän(t)-shən(t)s? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Entry 1,000,000,003 for the English-is-weird files. #AmEditing

(Luckily no dogs were murdered in the writing or editing of this book. Just an adulterous fiancé who had it coming.)

Wild to imagine an environment in which a bicyclist would regularly be at risk of dog attacks and in which it would be a totally normal thing to just... shoot the dogs.

I love the random facts I acquire while copyediting. I'm working on a mystery set in early 20th-century Istanbul and I just learned that there was a small revolver called a "Velo-Dog" produced specifically to defend cyclists from dog attacks. 🧐 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velo-dog#AmEditing
