Frans wanted us to present the argument that consciousness matters morally, and that while it may be convenient to deny the feelings of invertebrates, it is not ethically sound. I know if he were here with us today he would still be working on the topic of invertebrate consciousness...
So I was delighted when Frans invited me to co-author a Science Perspective article on the ethics of animal emotions a couple of years ago. We applied the evolutionary continuity argument not just to chimpanzees and other mammals, but to fish, birds and reptiles, molluscs, crabs, and insects...
