Fighting games sacrificing amt of yearly characters for photo real textures and whatnot is always gonna feel like a big mistake imo I'd much rather have a game that looks like GBVS and still gets 6 per year

Agreed, but statistically, we’re in the minority, because photorealism just appeals to a wider market. Which depresses me.

Gaming has been devolving into "hey look, this is pretty" for a while now. Style over substance. Who cares if the game is lacking content or runs at an unstable frame rate, it looks good for promos and advertisements and that's all that matters.
