Are you implying that the hotels have a contract with the convention center to provide rooms for events that convention center hosts? I don't think that is the case, but I could be wrong. I believe all of these are separate entities/contracts.
This makes total sense when dealing with a young con which has to prove to its worth the effort. But, given MFF's tenure, it doesn't feel like there is an advantage for the hotel anymore. The Hilton is still probably going to be near capacity, at a higher margin, despite not participating.
It feels like: Hotel A - Sold Out Hotel B - Sold Out Hotel C - Sold Out Hotel D - Sold Out Hotel E = Not a con hotel - Price Gouges those who want to go, but don't have another option. Feels like the best way to make money is to opt out of participation.
I am naive, but what does a hotel gain from having a con block if they are not renting convention space to the con?
