3/It's clunky to use and the multiple server thing doomed it from the start in terms of mass adoption. In the article, he mentions the primary Mastodon server (mastodon.social) has about 250k MAU, which is probably right, ignoring completely (while not MAU) BSky crossing the 10 mil user mark.
