Similar to the 'walk in the customers shoes' stuff. 1. I don't want to be walking in anyone's shoes or thinking about feet thanks 2. Not everyone has shoes or feet and I still don't want to think about feet. I do like the 'use it like a user' though with info about users provided.

I'm usually good with analogies and etymology but that one I had to Google. Suppose the term should have been dogfooded? Dogfed? itself. Also it's a bit yuck sounding anyway!
