When I worked for Radio-Canada (the French side of CBC, the Canadian national broadcaster), we were literally not allowed to write about polls during elections. Completely forbidden. It was a good policy.

I feel it also has a lot to do with the profession becoming a hobby for the rich, since it is too unstable and low wage to support anyone else. It attracts people with no stake in the betterment of society who just want adventure, glamour, and the chance to hobnob with rich & powerful peers.

Yes, but fun is the easiest way to engage, and to guarantee commercial success. But there are "games" that are considered legitimate because they're educational, rather than strictly fun. Educational software has a significant market, and even apps like Duolingo could be considered games.
TV shows and movies are passive experiences. Some are clearly intended to be background noise while people do other tasks. Games are interactive and by their very form require engagement.
